Computers are an integral part of human lives. Every work needs a digital touch to be acceptable in official front. Life without computers is unimaginable. However, there was a time when computers did not exist. The history of computers will help you understand the progression of this technology and how it has affected millions of lives worldwide. The innovation of computers is a complicated one which has been a breakthrough in the digital revolution. Unlike most of the devices, there is no specific inventor of the computer. Through decades of development, we have enhanced the working capabilities of a machine. Various people put in different ideas to create varied computers. Little ideas adding up slowly is the cause of the dynamic development of the computer.
The beginning days of the personal computer
Charles Babbage assembled the first mechanical computer and is known as the Father of Computers. One of the most significant dates in the history of computers is the year 1936. It was then that the first computer was developed. It was assembled by Konrad Zuse and dubbed the Z1. This computer was the first machine to be fully programmable. There were many devices prior to this but none had the computing power that it offered.
The commercial world took a liking to the computer
In 1942, the commercial market started to show interest in the computer. The market saw profit and a lot of opportunity in this machine. This company was known as ABC computers and it was run by John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry. Two years after this the Harvard Mark I computer was developed. This paved the way for further enhancement of the computer system. Over the next few years, the world started researching more about the potential and improvement in the efficiency of the computers. The next ten years were devoted in the introduction of transistors in the inner structure of a computer. The ENAIC 1 is one of the most interesting early computers. It operated using 20,000 vacuum tubes. It was a humongous machine. The developers started to work on making the machine smaller and compact.
The advent of programming languages
In the year 1954, the first highly successful programming language was developed. It was not written in binary or assembly language which is considered to be low level languages. FORTRAN was a very powerful tool which helped a lot of people program computers easily. In 1955, the Bank of America created the first computers which can be used at banks. The Magnetic Ink Character Recognition or MICR coupled with an actual computer was a ground breaking achievement in the field of banking. Another ground breaking event in the history of computers is the advent of the internet. The initial networking card was developed in the year 1973. It allowed data transfer between connected computers. This is somewhat similar to the internet we know in today’s world.
The history of computers has seen variety of breakthroughs and several alterations and changes have been witnessed. So we must be informed about the history of computers without which our present world will not be what it is today.
